בתחרות עצמה ישתתפו 50 המדינות המרכיבות את ארה"ב וחמש הטירטוריות הנוספות הקשורות אליה.
All the 50 states of USA and the 5 territories will take part in the contest.
מבנה התחרות זהה לתחרות האירווזיון האירופית כלומר יהיו בה 3 סיבובים מהם יעלו האמנים לשלב חצי הגמר והגמר.
In the the contest there will be 3 rounds , 2 semifinals and 1 Grand Final.
את טעמה של אמריקה בתחרות האירווזיון התחלנו להרגיש לראשונה בתחרות האירווזיון שהתקיימה בשטוקהולם בשנת 2016 בה הופיע ג'וסטין טימברלייק בהפסקה בתחרות.
